Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is widely used in natural resource related disciplines to enable timely, efficient, and effective access to information about all land, water, and air resources. Coupled with other geospatial technologies, GIS provides spatial data management, collection, analysis, and mapping capabilities to understand spatial patterns and relationships of natural resources and environment, support policy evaluation and decision-making, and assist natural resource conservation and sustainable development. In this presentation, I will demonstrate the wide applicability of GIS in research and teaching using the following projects from my own research: 1) American chestnut restoration using place names and environmental factors; 2) applying GIS to enhance extension and public outreach; 3) manage invasive exotic species using GIS and geospatial technology.
